Frequently asked questions

What to expect from therapy

It is completely natural to have questions before starting therapy. Below are some common questions and answers. If there is anything else you would like to know, you are always welcome to contact me.

What happens during the first session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another and for you to decide whether therapy with me feels right for you.

At the beginning of the session, I will explain confidentiality, supervision and how therapy works, giving you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

The first few sessions are often a space for you to begin telling your story and sharing whatever feels important to you. I will listen with care and may ask gentle questions at times to help me better understand your experiences and feelings.

There is no pressure to share everything immediately, and we will always work at a pace that feels supportive and manageable for you.

What happens during a therapy session?

Therapy sessions are a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly about whatever may be on your mind. Some people arrive knowing exactly what they would like to explore, while others may feel unsure where to begin — both are completely okay.

Together, we will explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences at a pace that feels comfortable for you. There is no pressure to talk about anything before you feel ready, and therapy will always move in a way that feels supportive and manageable.

Therapy is your space, and sessions do not have to follow a strict structure. Some days you may want to explore deeper experiences from the past, while other times you may simply need space to talk about a difficult week, current emotions, or even moments of happiness and progress. All of these experiences are welcome within the therapy space.

Some sessions may involve exploring past experiences and patterns, while others may focus more on present difficulties, coping strategies or moving forward. As an integrative therapist, I adapt the way I work to suit you as an individual.

What if I feel nervous?

Feeling nervous before starting therapy is completely normal. Many people feel anxious or unsure before their first session, especially if they have never had therapy before.

We will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you, and there is no expectation to share everything straight away. My aim is to create a calm, supportive space where you can feel safe, heard and understood.

If attending in person, you are welcome to have a tea or coffee during your session to help you feel more comfortable and settled.

Do I have to talk about difficult experiences straight away?

No. Therapy should move at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you. Building trust and feeling comfortable within the therapeutic relationship is important, and there is never pressure to discuss anything before you feel ready.

How often should I attend therapy?

Some people attend weekly sessions, while others may prefer fortnightly appointments depending on their needs, availability and circumstances. This is something we can discuss together.

Is therapy confidential?

Confidentiality is an important part of therapy. What you share within sessions will remain confidential, with the exception of situations involving serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or where there is a legal safeguarding obligation. This will always be discussed openly where possible.

Can I stop therapy whenever I want?

Yes. Therapy is your journey, and you are free to end sessions whenever you feel ready. Some clients prefer planned endings, while others may decide more suddenly depending on their circumstances.

How do online sessions work?

Online sessions take place through Google Meet in a safe and confidential setting. You do not need to worry about setting anything complicated up beforehand. Prior to your session, I will send you a link by email, and at the time of your appointment you simply click the link to join the session.

All you need is a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable to talk openly.

What if I don’t know what to say?

Many people worry about this before starting therapy. You do not need to arrive with everything figured out. Therapy is a space where we can gently explore your thoughts and feelings together, even if things feel confusing or difficult to put into words.

If you have any questions that are not answered here, you are very welcome to get in touch and ask. There is no such thing as a “silly” question when it comes to your wellbeing.
